Celebrating National Dog Day

August 26th is National Dog Day! Of course, Fido deserves to be celebrated every day, for his love, loyalty, and friendship. However, this is a pawesome chance to show your pet some extra TLC! Read on as a Cincinnati, OH vet offers some tips on celebrating National Dog Day.

Toys

New toys are a great way to brighten up Fido’s day. You can’t go wrong with something classic. (Tip: many of our canine patients get very, very excited over tennis balls.) You can also try something new, like a remote-controlled toy.

Treats

One thing that is guaranteed to get your canine pal’s tail going is a yummy snack. It’s a special occasion, so let Fido enjoy a bit of bacon, or even a plain cheeseburger. Doggy ice cream is also a good bet. Just don’t go crazy with fatty snacks.

Swimming Fun

Does your furry best friend like swimming? Take Fido to his favorite swimming hole, and let him have a dip. Or, if you want to stick closer to home, get your pooch a kiddie pool or fountain, and let him splash around in that.

Adventures!

Dogs love going to new places, and checking out new things. Indulge Fido’s taste for adventure by taking him somewhere new. Your pup may also be happy with a trip to a drive-through, or a long walk in a pretty new spot. Just be sure to follow proper social distancing guidelines.

Beds

Has Fido reduced his doggy bed to a few thin pieces of material? Get him a new one! Orthopedic beds are great for large breeds and senior dogs. Smaller pups may like beds with raised edges.

Bath

Could your canine buddy use a bath? There’s no time like the present! Remember to offer your pooch a special treat afterwards.

Adopt

This one is definitely not something to take lightly. However, if you have the time, space, and budget for another pet, and your household is able to absorb one, consider adopting. Getting a great forever home would give that one lucky pup the best Dog Day ever! Of course, adoption is forever, so you’ll want to think things over carefully before deciding.

Quiet Time

Fido really wants nothing more than to spend time with you. Carve out some quality time with your furry bff!
