Obesity in Cats

Did you know that over half of our feline friends are obese or overweight? That’s a lot of fat cats! Fluffy may be cute if she’s, well, a bit chubby, but she’ll be much healthier if she’s at, or at least near, her ideal weight. A local Cincinnati, OH vet discusses kitty obesity in this article.

Obese kitties face some very serious health risks. Heart disease, liver and kidney trouble, respiratory issues, skin problem, bone/joint issues, and reproductive trouble are just a few of the problems your cute little pet could develop. Chubby cats are also at higher risk of developing certain cancers, and are also more likely to have surgical complications after an operation.

It probably won’t be much of a shock to learn that diet plays a huge role in Fluffy’s weight. Kitties are quite small, so even overeating just a small amount each day can cause them to pack on extra pounds. Pay attention to your cat’s portion sizes. If your furry friend is getting round, yet turns into a little drama queen whenever she spots the bottom of her food dish, you may need to steel yourself against those plaintive meows. The type of food you give your pet is also important. Some brands are packed with fillers, which are often heavy on carbs. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Our feline buddies are very active and playful when they’re young, but they tend to lose steam steadily as they age. By the time Fluffy is a senior, she’ll spend most of her time napping, meditating, and quietly judging you. Keep your kitty active by offering her lots of toys. It will also help to set out things that encourage jumping and climbing, like cat towers. Regular play sessions will also be beneficial … not to mention adorable.

Weight Loss

If you think your kitty could stand to drop a few pounds, make her an appointment with the vet. You’ll want to make sure that there isn’t a medical condition causing your feline companion to gain weight. It’s also important for cats to lose weight gradually. A sudden drop in caloric intake can really wreak havoc with your furry pal’s metabolism, and could make her very sick!
